Paintings handed down from generation to generation are extremely rare, and Dunhuang frescoes with abundant stocks can supplement the deficiency of painting history. China’s literature, including poetry, has always had a tradition of describing the immediate scenery-landscapes, animals and plants. When we saw that Xu Ding, a scholar in the Qing Dynasty, and Yuan Gangfeng, a Japanese scholar, and other hand-painted maps of the Book of Songs, spread endlessly, we knew that what they said was true. On the other hand, poetic geography often only pays attention to the geographical conditions of landscape rivers, ignoring the characteristics of animals and plants on them.
